In West Africa, shrine figures are guardian figures found in shrines. They are sacred figures, representing spirits or gods and offering protection. Their forms are highly stylized. The figure on the left (below) is an ancestor figure from the village of Obire in Burkina Faso. It was one of a series of figures, each representing a king in a long-lasting dynasty.
